16 pagesI created this booklet using excerpts from Out of It, Michael’s first-hand account of living with paranoid schizophrenia. My goal was to visually represent his disillusionment and fractured reality, using design to step inside his perspective.
Retro elements and contemporary design reflect the late-90s setting, while varied typography mirrors shifting perceptions — repeated phrases, disconnected lettering, and ornate script inspired by “schizography,” the study of writing patterns in schizophrenia. I chose a dotted font to symbolize both a fractured sense of being and the dot matrix printers of the era.
To distort memory and perception, I physically manipulated vintage photographs during the scanning process, creating warped imagery that captures the instability of his experience. Chaotic word charts illustrate his tendency to draw connections between seemingly unrelated details—finding meaning in places others might overlook.
Michael’s story is raw, vulnerable, and deeply enlightening. This project is my visual interpretation of his world.
